Item sampling in service quality assessment surveys to improve response rates and reduce respondent burden

چکیده
Purpose – Survey researchers sometimes develop large pools of items about which they seek participants’ views. As a general proposition, library participants cannot reasonably be expected to respond to 100 þ items on a given service quality assessment protocol. This paper seeks to describe the use of matrix sampling to reduce that burden on the participant. Design/methodology/approach – Matrix sampling is a survey method that can be used to collect data on all survey items without requiring every participant to react to every survey question. Here the features of data are investigated from one such survey, the LibQUAL þ w Lite protocol, and the participation rates, completion times, and result comparisons across the two administration protocols – the traditional LibQUAL þ w protocol and the LibQUAL þ w Lite protocol – at each of the four institutions are explored. Findings – Greater completion rates were realized with the LibQUAL þ w Lite protocol. Originality/value – The data from the Lite protocol might be the most accurate representation of the views of all the library users in a given community.

A prenotification letter increased initial response, whereas sender did not affect response rates.
OBJECTIVE To find ways to improve response rates of medical and health surveys. We investigated whether a prenotification letter instead of a second reminder and varying senders of the questionnaires would affect response rates. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING We present the results of two studies. In the first study, four groups were compared that either received a prenotification letter (group 1 a...

BACKGROUND While guidance exists for obtaining population size estimates using multiplier methods with respondent-driven sampling surveys, we lack specific guidance for making sample size decisions. OBJECTIVE To guide the design of multiplier method population size estimation studies using respondent-driven sampling surveys to reduce the random error around the estimate obtained. METHODS Th...
متن کاملEvidence on the Comparison of Telephone and Internet Surveys for Respondent Recruitment
Internet surveys have a potential use for survey research when compared against costs and declining response rates of traditional modes as they form a powerful tool for reducing respondents' burden in complex questionnaires. On the other hand, there exists scepticism about the reliability and robustness of the collected data. Arenze et al. (2005) argue that case studies involving Internet surve...

The aim of this paper is to describe innovations taking place in national nutrition surveys in the UK and the challenges of undertaking innovations in such settings. National nutrition surveys must be representative of the overall population in characteristics such as socio-economic circumstances, age, sex and region. High response rates are critical. Dietary assessment innovations must therefo...

Although web-based survey research of the general population has serious limitations (e.g., non-coverage, lack of a sampling plan), it has been embraced by many who do survey research. It has been shown to be particularly useful when the population surveyed is almost universally connected to the Internet, and is proficient with the medium and the tools to use the medium (computing devices: e.g....
